{"id":8513,"date":"2020-02-18T14:57:06","date_gmt":"2020-02-18T14:57:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nbrri.gov.ng\/new\/?p=8513"},"modified":"2020-02-19T13:17:37","modified_gmt":"2020-02-19T13:17:37","slug":"weekly-research-seminar-development-of-agrowaste-based-modifiers-for-the-provision-of-stabilised-earth-roads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nbrri.gov.ng\/new\/weekly-research-seminar-development-of-agrowaste-based-modifiers-for-the-provision-of-stabilised-earth-roads\/","title":{"rendered":"Weekly Research Seminar: Development of Agrowaste-Based Modifiers for the Provision of Stabilised Earth Roads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Focus<\/strong>&#8211; To design a mix design using locally sourced materials like rice husk ash, wood ash and Kaolin for the improvement of rural access roads to withstand every weather.<\/p>\n<p>Organised by- Geotechnics Sector, Road Research Department.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aim and Objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The aim of this research project is to explore the viability of producing binders for all-weather access earth roads using agro\/industrial wastes to harness the alkali activation process for stabilisation.<\/p>\n<p>This would be achieved by:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u00a0Synthesis and characterization of alkali activated binders using solely agro\/industrial wastes;<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0 Examining the effect of the binders on geotechnical properties of the soil;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>iii.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Assessing the effect of curing periods on the alkali-activation process;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u00a0 Evaluating the effect of soil mineralogy on the alkali activation process<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>There is a need to explore the possibility of conducting research into eco-efficient and lower embodied energy cements that can potentially form a key component for a sustainable future global construction material<\/p>\n<p>Alkali activation process is a technology that allows for synthesis of binders that can improve soils and other materials under ambient conditions<\/p>\n<p><strong>Outcome<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The study has demonstrated the feasibility of total replacement of synthetic alkali activators with agrowastes in alkali activation process<\/p>\n<p>Inclusion of binder content significantly modified the strength of some soils by up to 95% and improved water resistance; minimal strength gain was observed with other soils.<\/p>\n<p>Soil type was a significant variable in the strength development indicating that mineralogy of soils needs to be investigated in the adoption of this stabilization mechanism<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Focus&#8211; To design a mix design using locally sourced materials like rice husk ash, wood ash and Kaolin for the improvement of rural access roads to withstand every weather.
