Federal Government Agency Partners with NW Green Solutions to launch the First Plastic Road in Nigeria as a Research Project

The Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI), a Federal Government parastatal under the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, in partnership with NW Green Solutions Limited, an innovative and eco-friendly construction company with a drive to transform the face of the construction industry in Nigeria, have launched the first plastic road in Nigeria.

This groundbreaking collaboration intends to explore innovative approaches to enhance the durability and performance of conventional roads and reduce plastic waste pollution, thereby promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

After nearly two years of extensive laboratory testing and research, the project has entered the field trial phase. The research trial is conducted on a 500-meter dual carriageway in Lugbe, Abuja. The DG/CEO of NBRRI, Prof. Samson Duna, emphasized the transformative potential of the plastic road project, stating, “We firmly believe that this initiative can revolutionize Nigeria’s approach to road construction. We can establish a more sustainable and eco-friendlier road network by incorporating recycled plastic waste.” The plastic road will be closely monitored to evaluate its durability and performance.

A successful outcome from this trial can pave the way for scaling up the plastic road technology across other regions of Nigeria, similar to the widespread usage of this technology across Asia and Europe. Inaddition, the Managing Director of NW Green Solutions Limited, Najib Waziri, Esq, ACIArb expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with NBRRI, stating, “We are thrilled to be part of this research trial in collaboration with NBRRI. Our objective is to demonstrate that plastic waste can be utilized to create environmentally friendly infrastructure, thereby reducing the environmental impact of road construction. “Implementing plastic waste in road construction represents a novel technology that has gained attraction worldwide, and as such, Nigeria can not be exempted.
