NBRRI READY TO PARTNER WITH FEDERAL ROAD SAFETY CORPS IN CURBING THE MENACE OF TRAFFIC OFFENCES IN NIGERIA

On Wednesday 19th of October, 2022, the Acting Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in his office at the Corps Headquarters in Abuja received a high-level delegation from the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) who came on a courtesy visit.
The visiting team led by the Director-General/CEO of NBRRI, Engr. Prof. Samson Duna received a standard welcome from the entrance of the FRSC office as the team was ushered on a facility tour beginning with the monitoring/control room, to the customer care Centre and then to the broadcasting room of the 107.1 FM station of the FRSC. It was an educative tour as the team were shown the various functions of these facilities which ended with the DG featuring on a live radio broadcast. After the tour, the NBRRI delegation were warmly welcomed by the Acting Corps Marshal, Corps Dauda Ali Biu and a host of senior offices of the Corps.
Engr. Prof. Samson Duna expressed gratitude to the Acting Corps Marshal for graciously welcoming NBRRI to his office. He also congratulated him for his appointment and prayed for God’s wisdom on him to lead in good faith. Still on appreciation, the DG expressed joy and satisfaction on service delivery and traffic control by the men of FRSC in the country. He stated that from henceforth, he will add his voice to those who are crying for more funding for FRSC so that they can deliver the country from traffic offences and accidents.
Delivering his speech, Prof. Duna began by briefing the Acting Corps Marshal what NBRRI is all about, what NBRRI has done in areas of building and road sectors in the country, and various research projects NBRRI has collaborated with FRSC and the ones both agencies are currently working on, some of which are; Superpave Mix Design Code Development, Traffic assessment of some selected highways across Nigeria, Assessment of speed trends during day-time and night-time within Jos metropolis, Road traffic crash assessment in Nigeria, Road Safety Guidelines for Nigeria, Road Safety Audit of a section of road in Abuja, etc. The DG then stated some ongoing research work by NBRRI and one of the most important of them is the team working on having an equipment that can capture vehicles’ plate number of traffic light offenders when an officer of the law is not on ground. This he stated will go a long way in addressing the menace of traffic light offences and possible accident cases caused by these offences.
Responding to the visit of the DG and his team, the Acting Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Corps Dauda Ali Biu welcomed the DG and his entourage and said he is delighted to have NBRRI in his domain. He also stated that the visit has no other acronym of qualifying it than to call it a positive visitation and partnership. Speaking further, Corps Biu stated that the FRSC is expected to corporate and partner with NBRRI in all sector of road. He mentioned some areas of past collaborations between FRSC and NBRRI as he also made known that during the public hearing of NBRRI Bill at the National Assembly, FRSC sent delegates to support and witnessed the proceedings as they also sent in their memo in support of the bill. He then finalized by promising a viable collaboration between both agencies and agreed to set up a technical team that will work with NBRRI in sorting out areas of collaborations between both agencies as soon as possible.
